In fact, it only activates genes, and it is out-competed by a heme-binding receptor to repress the same genes during the larval to pupal transition in the fruit fly.

Agrawal, professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Delaware, is co-author of a paper that explores how infants can be trained to avoid obstacles using mobile robots with force feedback joysticks. Co-authors of the paper include Cole Galloway, associate professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, and graduate students Christina Ragonesi and Chen Xi. This work is funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.

Landmark Jefferson Study Shows Physician’s Empathy Directly Associated with Positive Clinical Outcomes in Diabetic Patients
March 7, 2011-- It has been thought that the quality of the physician-patient relationship is integral to positive outcomes but until now, data to confirm such beliefs has been hard to find. Through a landmark study, a research team from Jefferson Medical College (JMC) of Thomas Jefferson University has been able to quantify a relationship between physicians’ empathy and their patients’ positive clinical outcomes, suggesting that a physician’s empathy is an important factor associated with clinical competence. The study is available in the March 2011 issue of Academic Medicine.

December 8, 2010--The 3rd Annual Patient Safety and Quality Leadership Institute (PSQLI), created by the American Medical Student Association, will be held on the Thomas Jefferson University campus from January 14-16, 2011. The institute is a three‐day intensive interprofessional leadership training program for medical students, residents, and students of allied health professions from across the nation.

November 22, 2010--The Delaware Health Sciences Alliance (DHSA) has awarded grants to two collaborative pilot projects, both focusing on children's health. One group of researchers will develop novel approaches to studying determinants of childhood obesity, and the other will explore the relationships between brain activity and exercise interventions in children with cerebral palsy.
